Veteran Sri Lankan Tamil politician and moderate leader, R Sampanthan, passed away at 91 after a prolonged illness. He was a prominent figure in Sri Lankan politics, leading the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) since 2004 and serving as the opposition leader from 2015 to 2019. Throughout his career, Sampanthan advocated for a negotiated political settlement to address the Tamil demand for autonomy, a cause he pursued since Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948.
