Peruvian copper producer Southern Copper plans to restart Tia Maria mine development amid community opposition over environmental concerns.

Peruvian copper producer Southern Copper plans to restart development of the Tia Maria mine on Monday, according to internal documents, despite years of community opposition over environmental concerns. The $1.4 billion project, which has been on hold, was previously set to start groundwork by the end of 2021 or the first half of 2022. Protests against the mine between 2011 and 2015 left six people dead.
