Dubai plans to expand its metro system by 2030, growing from 64 to 96 stations and covering 140 square kilometres. The Executive Council of Dubai approved plans to increase the share of public transport to 45%, reduce carbon emissions to 16 tonnes per capita, and develop economic opportunities around metro stations. By 2040, the network is expected to grow to 140 stations, covering 228 square kilometres.
