City Rail Link's signalling systems, or "traffic lights" for trains, were successfully connected to the wider rail network during Matariki weekend. This brings the project closer to having trains run through Auckland city centre tunnels for testing and training this year. Overhead electric lines between Papakura and Pukekohe were also powered up for the first time.
