Michigan State University named Ozan Baris, Heath Baldwin, and Skyla Schulte as George Alderton Athletes of the Year for 2021. Baris, a tennis player, and Baldwin, a track and field athlete, share the men's title; Baldwin aims for the US Olympic team. Schulte, a gymnast, helped the Spartans win Big Ten titles. Hockey captain Nash Nienhaus won the Chester Brewer Leadership Award, and field hockey star Ashley Harlock received the Dr. James Feurig Achievement and Service Award.
