Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK party amended the Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act of 1937 to combat the issue of illicit liquor, raising penalties with a maximum punishment of 10 years' Rigorous Imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 5 lakh. In cases of death due to consumption, bootleggers face Life Imprisonment with a fine of at least Rs 10 lakh. The amendment, following the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy, introduces stricter penalties for manufacturing, possessing, and selling illicit liquor.
