Salem's interim police chief, Derek Weeks, has been appointed as the permanent chief, effective July 1. Weeks has been with the Salem Police Department since 2001 and previously served with the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office. City Manager Chris Dorsey praised Weeks' experience and vision, stating he knows the city's unique challenges and is committed to continuing the department's strong tradition of service.
