Rio Tinto and Quebec government invest $375M in a carbon-free aluminum smelting pilot plant using Elysis technology at Rio Tinto's Arvida smelter.
Rio Tinto and Quebec government partner to invest $375 million in a pilot plant using Elysis technology, a carbon-free aluminum smelting method, at Rio Tinto's Arvida smelter in Quebec. The plant aims to address carbon emissions in aluminum production. Rio Tinto will invest $235 million, and Investissement Quebec will contribute $140 million as equity partners. The demonstration plant is a crucial step towards full-scale industrialization of Elysis technology, which eliminates direct greenhouse gas emissions from aluminum smelting. The plant, set to include 10 pots, will have the capacity to produce 2,500 tonnes of commercial-quality aluminum per year.
