The International Criminal Court (ICC) has convicted Al Hassan Ag Abdoul Aziz Ag Mohamed Ag Mahmoud of war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 2012 Islamist militant rule over Timbuktu in Mali. Al Hassan, a leader of the al-Qaeda-linked group Ansar Dine, was accused of overseeing amputations, floggings, and forced marriages of women, as well as the destruction of religious and historic buildings. The ICC has yet to announce his sentencing, which could result in a life sentence.
