A transgender woman, Grace Pinson, has won a $10,000 civil rights judgment against Arizona federal penitentiary in a case where she was assaulted by a male inmate while housed in a men's unit. Pinson claimed her cellmate attempted to rape her and beat her with closed fists in July 2019. U.S. District Judge Rosemary Marquez ruled that the prison staff did not know beforehand that Pinson's cellmate was threatening her, but found the Tucson penitentiary negligent.
