Victoria's Port Phillip Prison will close and inmates will be transferred to the new $1.1 billion Western Plains Correctional Centre in Lara, north-east of Geelong, according to the state government. Port Phillip Prison, a maximum security facility, will close by the end of 2025, while Dhurringile Prison, a 59-year-old minimum security facility, will close within months. The 1208-bed Western Plains Correctional Centre, completed in 2022, has been sitting idle.
