Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry appointed Dr. Ralph Abraham as the state's first Surgeon General, following the creation of the position by House Bill 853. The Surgeon General, who must be a practicing physician in Louisiana, will be responsible for formulating health policies, including healthcare workforce development, wellness and disease prevention advocacy, and coordination with other state agencies and institutions to improve health outcomes. This appointment coincides with a series of leadership changes within the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH).
