40% of long-term antidepressant users can stop taking the drugs with a doctor's help and access to internet or telephone helplines, according to a study led by the University of Southampton. Researchers discovered that patients who could access online support and psychologists by phone had lower rates of depression, fewer withdrawal symptoms, and reported better mental wellbeing. The study involved the University of Liverpool and Hull York Medical School, and was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research.
