2023 saw a 27% decrease in Irish afforestation compared to 2022, with a total of 1,651 hectares planted. Farmers accounted for 47% of the afforestation, an increase from 23% in 2022 and 97% in 2014. Broadleaf species, including Alder and Birch, made up 54% of the 2023 afforestation area, marking the highest share in the 2007-2023 series. Roscommon had the highest county share of afforested area at 11%.
