Fisheries NZ report links Milky White Flesh Syndrome in snapper to La Niña, warmer waters, and lower plankton production.
Fisheries New Zealand released a report on Milky White Flesh Syndrome, identifying complex climate factors like extended La Niña weather patterns and warmer waters as likely causes. These factors lead to lower production of phytoplankton and zooplankton, affecting fish food sources and resulting in malnourished snapper with white, mushy flesh. Despite the condition, the fish remain safe for consumption.
