Canadian government lifts 30-year northern cod moratorium, allows 18,000-tonne catch for 2024 commercial fishery.
The Canadian government has ended the 30-year-old northern cod moratorium off the north and east coasts of Newfoundland and Labrador, reestablishing a commercial northern cod fishery for the 2024 season. The government will allow a total catch of 18,000 tonnes, with the majority going to the inshore fleet. Fisheries Minister Diane Lebouthillier calls the move a historic milestone for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, though the moratorium had previously wiped out tens of thousands of jobs and transformed the province's economy and demographics.
