2014-2022 US transgender mental distress and depression rates doubled, coinciding with rising laws and social restrictions.

Between 2014-2022, self-reported mental distress and depression rates among US transgender and gender-diverse adults more than doubled, according to a JAMA Internal Medicine study. Frequent mental distress rose from 18.8% to 38.9% and depression from 19.7% to 51.3%, coinciding with rising laws and social restrictions affecting their rights and protections. The researchers warn of worsening mental health in these populations due to increased discrimination and political attacks.
