Lufthansa plans to add an environmental charge of up to €72 to EU, UK, Norway, and Switzerland flights to cover new EU emission reduction costs.

Lufthansa, the largest German airline, plans to add an environmental charge of up to €72 ($77) to its fares starting next year to cover the cost of new EU rules on reducing emissions. The surcharge will be applied to all flights departing from the European Union, the UK, Norway, and Switzerland. Ticket prices will rise between €1 and €72 depending on the type of ticket and route. The airline group states that it cannot bear the costs on its own and the charge will cover part of the steadily rising additional costs due to regulatory environmental requirements, including sustainable aviation fuel derived from bio-based materials.
