Cowichan Tribes, BC's largest First Nation, signs agreement with federal and provincial governments to fully manage youth and family services under 2020 Indigenous child welfare legislation.

The Cowichan Tribes, the largest First Nation in British Columbia, has signed a co-ordination agreement with the federal and provincial governments to fully assume responsibility over youth and family services for its citizens. This follows the 2020 federal legislation that allows Indigenous communities to manage their own child welfare systems. The historic agreement will provide care and support for the community, prioritizing keeping children with their families and placing them with relatives in other Indigenous homes.
