New research from Indiana University Kelley School of Business reveals pharmaceutical companies exploited a loophole in the DEA's monitoring system, leading to an oversupply of opioids and fueling the opioid crisis. High supply chain complexity, such as pharmacies with multiple distributors, was a hallmark of this activity. The opioid epidemic had a more significant impact on Black communities, where overdose deaths tripled between 2014-2020.
