Due to weeks of heavy rain, flooding in parts of Iowa forced evacuations, with Rock Valley's 4,200 residents told to leave their homes as the Rock River reached capacity. Flooding also closed highways in southeastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa. Simultaneously, the U.S. experienced record-breaking heat, with approximately 15 million people under a heat warning and another 90 million under a heat advisory, causing strained resources for emergency services and utilities.
