Researchers in Iowa call for more education about early warning signs of dementia and Alzheimer's during Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. They state changes in an Alzheimer's patient's brain can occur up to 20 years before diagnosis. In the U.S., there are approximately 7 million people age 65 and older living with Alzheimer's, with 62,000 in Iowa. Despite time and money spent on research, the lifetime risk for Alzheimer's at age 45 is one in five for women and one in 10 for men, consistent across all ethnicities.
