Scientists at University of Exeter discover a genetic cause of obesity linked to SMIM1 gene variant, affecting 300K people globally.
Scientists at the University of Exeter discovered a genetic cause of obesity linked to the SMIM1 gene variant, which disables the gene in individuals without the Vel blood group. This genetic variant causes decreased resting energy expenditure and impacts around 300,000 people globally. The researchers hope to test if a widely available drug for thyroid dysfunction may be beneficial in treating obesity in people lacking SMIM1.
