50% price increase in garri and rice in Enugu, Nigeria due to exportation, food insecurity, and subsidy removal.
In Enugu State, Nigeria, a market survey revealed a 50% increase in the prices of garri and rice. A cup of garri rose from N150 to N250, with a five-liter paint bucket costing between N4,000 and N4,300. A bag of garri now costs N45,000, up from N30,000 in April. The price of foreign rice increased from N70,000-N75,000 to N95,000-N100,000, while local rice costs between N80,000 and N85,000. The high cost of food is attributed to exportation, food insecurity, and the removal of petroleum product subsidies.
