Philippines expands natural gas power sector, despite climate concerns, with Batangas governor linked to profiting company.

The Philippines is rapidly expanding its natural gas power sector, despite climate change concerns and potential cost increases for consumers. An AP investigation found that Governor Hermilando Mandanas of Batangas province, a key supporter of natural gas, is connected to a company that could profit from the expansion. The government aims to make the Philippines a liquified natural gas hub for the Asia-Pacific region, with Batangas at its core. Four gas power plants are currently operating, and four more are planned, along with six new terminals for importing liquified natural gas.
