2 Hawaii residents fined $20,000 each for endangered monk seal pup's death due to dog mauling.

Two Hawaii residents were fined $20,000 each for their alleged roles in the fatal mauling of a critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal pup by unleashed dogs. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration found the pup, known as PO7, suffered puncture wounds consistent with dog bites and hemorrhaging consistent with being shaken by a dog. The loss of a female monk seal is a significant blow to conservation efforts as she could have grown up to give birth to her own pups.
