Former Riviera Beach police sergeant Russell Byrd was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a weapon for striking a man in the head with a pistol during a confrontation in 2023. Byrd has since resigned from the department and is being held at the Palm Beach County jail. The Palm Beach County State Attorney's Office is working with the Riviera Beach Police Department to resolve the issue.
