Researchers have found that using fake nests with chicken eggs and placing deer meat near them increased the survival rate of the critically endangered capercaillie by 83% in the Cairngorms. The study suggests that diversionary feeding could be a significant contributor to saving the species from extinction. Organisations such as Forestry and Land Scotland and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds are now deploying this tactic in bird breeding.
