University of Gothenburg researchers find dissolved methane from Nord Stream gas pipeline explosion remains in southern Baltic Sea.
University of Gothenburg researchers discovered that much of the methane released from the Nord Stream gas pipeline explosion in September 2022 remained dissolved in the southern Baltic Sea. Between 10,000 and 50,000 tonnes of methane, distinguishable by its different isotopic composition, stayed in the water rather than reaching the atmosphere. The long-term impact on biological life in the southern Baltic Sea is unclear, requiring further research and monitoring.
