17-year-old Aboriginal girl XY's human rights violated in state care; Victorian Coroner recommends improvements for the Department of Families, Fairness, and Housing following her 2021 death.
17-year-old Aboriginal girl XY's human rights were violated when the state department failed to address her desire to connect with her culture while in care. Victorian Coroner Simon McGregor made 17 recommendations, including for the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing, following an inquest into the girl's 2021 death. XY was under state care at a residential unit in Bendigo operated by Anglicare Victoria when she took her own life. She was removed from her family at 13 due to child protection services' reports, starting from when she was 22 months old.
