South Australia bans engineered stone products from 1st July 2024 to protect workers from silicosis, a fatal lung disease. Alternatives include porcelain, stainless steel, sintered stone, polished concrete, recycled glass, and natural stones. The ban follows a unanimous decision by Work Health and Safety Ministers after expert advice revealed a rise in silicosis cases. Amendments to regulations will strengthen the framework for crystalline silica processes in other industries.
