33rd Blue Planet Prize recipients announced: Prof. Robert Costanza from the US and Australia recognized for contributions to ecological economics. The Asahi Glass Foundation, chaired by Takuya Shimamura, awards two individuals/organizations annually for addressing global environmental issues. Prof. Costanza's 1997 paper demonstrated the ecosystem services' value exceeding the world's GDP at the time.
