Tasmanian child sexual abuse survivor Katrina Munting awarded $2m by court against state's responsibility.

A Tasmanian child sexual abuse survivor, Katrina Munting, has been awarded $2m by the court after a legal fight against the state's responsibility. Munting was abused by her science teacher, Marcus James Pollard, at a Hobart high school in the late 1990s. Pollard pleaded guilty to persistent sexual abuse of a young person in 2020 and was sentenced to three years in jail. Munting sued Pollard and the state of Tasmania for damages, arguing the state's level of accountability was greater than acknowledged. The Supreme Court of Tasmania awarded Munting $2,016,135 after a March 2023 trial, following the state's acceptance of vicarious liability for Pollard's abuse.
