CBIC launches awareness campaign against phone, text, and social media fraudsters posing as customs officials in India.
The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs (CBIC) of India has launched a multi-modal awareness campaign against fraudsters posing as Indian Customs officials, who are extorting money from the public via phone calls, texts and social media. Common tactics include fake calls/SMS, where fraudsters pose as courier officials/staff or customs/police/CBI officials, demand payment for customs duty/clearance fees and threaten legal action or fines if the person does not cooperate. The CBIC advises the public to be vigilant, discern the modus operandi of fraudsters, protect their information and report such acts to prevent falling victim to these scams.
