An Auckland liquor importer and distributor, Golden Grand Trading and Mayajaal Holdings, were fined $244,000 for trying to sell thousands of bottles of illegal liquor and avoiding consumer protection rules. The companies were investigated by New Zealand Food Safety and pleaded guilty to charges under the Food Act 2014. The importer was fined $142,000 and the distributor $102,000, with both companies ordered to share costs for alcohol disposal. The illegal liquor, worth $292,526, was seized from their distribution warehouse, and 30 bottles sold by retailers were recalled.
