Scientists at ZSI's Gopalpur center discovered a new snake eel species, Ophichthus Suryai, in Odisha and named it in honor of Surya Kumar Mohanty.
Scientists from ZSI's Gopalpur center in Odisha have discovered a new species of snake eel, Ophichthus Suryai, named in honor of former joint director of the state fishery department, Surya Kumar Mohanty. At least six specimens were collected from various estuarine ecosystems, including Subarnarekha river, Paradip, and Bahuda river. DNA analysis at ZSI's laboratory confirmed the species as distinct.
