Black Civil War soldier David Chippie, a "Juneteenth veteran," was honored at his grave site in Riverhead Cemetery by the Society of the Grand Army of the Republic ahead of the Juneteenth holiday. Chippie, who served in the 29th Regiment of Connecticut Volunteers [Colored], fought in key battles of the Civil War and was stationed in Texas when he learned of emancipation on June 19, 1865.
