Myanmar's junta orders evacuation of thousands near Sittwe due to threats from ethnic rebels, Arakan Army.
Myanmar's junta has ordered thousands of people living near the state capital Sittwe to evacuate due to threats from ethnic rebels. Sittwe is a key junta stronghold in western Rakhine state, where the military has lost territory to the Arakan Army (AA). The AA is fighting for autonomy for the state's ethnic Rakhine population and has vowed to capture Sittwe. Residents from 15 villages around Sittwe were given five days to leave their homes and move to the city, with threats of violence by the military if the deadline was not met.
