The Makah Tribe in Washington State has been granted federal approval to hunt up to 25 grey whales over a ten-year period, ending a two-decade-long struggle for the tribe to resume their whaling tradition. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) granted the tribe a waiver under the Marine Mammal Protection Act, allowing for the subsistence and ceremonial hunting of two or three Eastern North Pacific grey whales per year in U.S. waters.
