34-year-old Anthony Goddard drowned in Vermont's Mad River while attempting to swim across it with his young daughter on his back. Witnesses reported that Goddard began to struggle in the water and went under, with bystanders able to rescue his daughter but not locate Goddard. Troopers arrived minutes later and brought Goddard to shore, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause and manner of death.
