Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego files for bankruptcy due to hundreds of sexual abuse claims.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego will file for bankruptcy amid hundreds of legal claims from alleged sexual abuse victims. Cardinal Robert McElroy stated that bankruptcy would help the Diocese fulfill its goals and compensate abuse victims. The Diocese faced lawsuits dating back to 1945, settled 144 claims in 2007, but recently received over 450 claims, with over 60% for incidents over 50 years ago.
