U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and Coalition of Archaeological Synthesis form People, Fire, and Pines working group to study Indigenous fire stewardship for wildfire management.

The U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs have formed the People, Fire, and Pines working group, supported by the Coalition of Archaeological Synthesis (CfAS), to address uncontrollable wildfires in the northern U.S. and Canada. By studying Indigenous fire stewardship through oral histories and archaeological data, researchers have discovered that Indigenous peoples have shaped landscapes with fire for centuries. Collaborations between forest agencies, Indigenous communities, and archaeologists are demonstrating the value of integrating the past into solutions for wildfire management.
