More than $33.5m has been spent on a Northland railway project between Kauri and Ōtiria, which is now on hold. Critics argue that this highlights the danger of prioritizing pet projects over economics, as over $25m worth of railway sleepers are stored unused across Northland. The Labour-NZ First government pledged tens of millions to revive the line in 2020, but it remains in limbo.
