India plans to reduce coal imports and increase domestic production, focusing on energy independence and green energy transition.
India's federal coal minister, G. Kishan Reddy, announced the government's plan to decrease coal imports and increase domestic production. In 2023, India, the world's second-largest coal consumer, imported 176 million tons of thermal coal. The country aims to reduce its reliance on foreign coal suppliers and strengthen energy independence. While setting up new coal power plants, India also focuses on green energy transition to meet its 2070 net zero emission goals.
