University of Toronto researchers found that fast radio bursts originate in Milky Way-like galaxies, contrary to previous theories.
University of Toronto researchers have discovered that fast radio bursts (FRBs), mysterious cosmic explosions, originate in galaxies similar to our own Milky Way. Analyzing data from the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, the team found that non-repeating FRBs come from galaxies with modest densities and modest magnetic fields, different from the dense, extremely magnetized environments previously thought to host these cosmic explosions. This research provides new insights into the origins of FRBs and offers a better understanding of the local environments in which they are produced.
