2022 report reveals a widening global energy access gap, with 685 million people without electricity and 2.1 billion lacking clean cooking fuels, threatening UN SDG7 goals.

A new report warns that the world is off track to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG7) for energy by 2030, as the global energy access gap worsens. In 2022, 685 million people were without electricity, a 10-million increase from 2021, mainly due to population growth in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, 2.1 billion people still lack access to clean cooking fuels and technologies, leading to 3.2 million premature deaths annually. Despite advancements in renewable energy and energy efficiency, immediate action is required to meet global targets.
