Mining giants Vale, BHP, and Samarco propose a $26bn reparation deal for 2015 Brazilian tailings dam collapse (19 deaths, pollution).

Mining giants Vale and BHP, along with their joint venture Samarco, have proposed a new $26 billion reparation deal to settle damages from a 2015 tailings dam collapse in Brazil. The new offer totals 140 billion reais, including 37 billion reais already disbursed in reparation measures. The fresh proposal is 13 billion reais higher than a previous rejection by the Brazilian government, which was seeking a 12-year payment period, not including the amount already spent by the miners. The collapse of the Samarco iron ore mine's tailings dam near Mariana, Minas Gerais, resulted in 19 deaths, left hundreds homeless, and polluted the Doce River.
