German scientists develop human antibodies neutralizing European black widow venom, potentially replacing horse-derived antidotes.
Scientists in Germany have developed fully human antibodies that can neutralize the alpha-latrotoxin of the European black widow, potentially reducing the need for antibodies derived from horses to treat disease caused by spider bites. These human antibodies show neutralization of black widow spider venom in a cell-based assay. This new treatment could be superior to existing antidotes but will need further testing before being available to patients.
