Emerald ash borer, a destructive invasive pest, found in Vancouver for the first time.
Emerald ash borer, a destructive invasive pest that has killed tens of millions of trees in North America, has been spotted in Vancouver. The insect is native to colder parts of East Asia and likely arrived in the early 1990s in eastern North America. The arrival in Vancouver is concerning to entomologists with 30 years of experience in forest insects, as the pest has previously been the farthest west it's been seen in Canada.
