Canada plans to establish a Digital Safety Commission of Canada with fining power and an ombudsperson to address online harms.
Canada's Justice Minister, Arif Virani, says the establishment of a new regulator to protect Canadians from online harms will take some time. The government plans to create a new Digital Safety Commission of Canada, which would have the power to fine companies and evaluate their digital safety plans. The legislation also proposes setting up an ombudsperson to address concerns raised by Canadians, supported by a new Digital Safety Office.
